The Dark and Stormy (But Make It Guilt-Free)

There are roughly a million cocktails in the world. Most of them require seventeen ingredients, a muddler you don't own, and the patience of someone who didn't just get home from work.

The Dark and Stormy requires three things. Rum. Ginger beer. Lime. That's it. That's the whole drink.

It's been around since the early 1900s, invented in Bermuda by someone who presumably also didn't have time for muddling. Legend has it they looked at a glass of dark rum and ginger beer and thought it looked like a storm cloud. We'd have called it "delicious," but Bermuda, your call.

Here's how to make one that's actually worth talking about.

**What you'll need**

- 60mL dark rum (we like Bundaberg Rum — keeping it Australian)
- 1 can Frekl Classic Ginger Beer
- Half a lime
- Ice
- A glass (copper mug if you're feeling fancy, but we won't judge)

**What to do**

Fill your glass with ice. Pour the rum over the top. Squeeze in half a lime. Top with Frekl Classic, slowly — you want that layered storm cloud look. Give it one gentle stir if you must, but honestly, it's better when you let the rum and ginger beer find each other naturally.

Done. Thirty seconds, tops.

**Why it works with Frekl**

Most ginger beers are so sweet they drown the rum. Frekl Classic is sessionable and clean — the ginger comes through without competing. The rum stays rum. The ginger stays ginger. Everyone gets along.

Plus, you're cutting a heap of sugar out of the equation without anyone at the table noticing. Which means you can have two. We'd recommend having two.

**Variations worth trying**

Swap the rum for bourbon and you've got a Kentucky Stormy (not a real name, but it should be). Use Frekl Double Ginger if you want extra heat. Use Frekl Finger Lime and skip the fresh lime entirely — it's already in there.

Put a Frekl in the fridge. The storm's coming.
